Clarify your purpose

Be clear about your qualifications and skills

Job hunting can feel like navigating a jungle, which is why it’s crucial to reflect on your requirements and preferences before starting your search. When you are clear about what you’re looking for, it becomes easier for recruitment consultants to help you find the perfect match. If you contact a recruitment agency and say you are looking for jobs as a driver, welder, teacher, or customer service employee all at once, it can give a misleading impression of your true preferences. On the other hand, if you are specific—for example, that you want a job as a carpenter and thrive in larger teams on big construction sites—you come across as focused and serious in your job search. This clarity also makes it easier for recruitment consultants and your network to guide you toward the right opportunity.

Clarify your purpose

When submitting an application, make it absolutely clear which position you are applying for and in which location. This is especially important for recruitment agencies, but also for many companies, as they often have multiple positions advertised. Being specific shows that you are organized and professional. The same applies if you call a contact person regarding a job posting—always start the conversation by clearly stating which position you are calling about.

Take control

If you call a contact person for a job advertisement, remember that you are taking the initiative—take control of the conversation and prepare thoroughly beforehand. Consider what you want to achieve from the call, and think about both the position and the company before reaching out. First impressions can be decisive in a job search process.

Be curious and open to new opportunities

Always stay open to job opportunities—it might not immediately seem like your dream job, but it can be a way to get your foot in the door at a company. If you’re working with a recruitment agency, the consultant may also guide you toward another position that fits you even better.

The job interview is a mutual evaluation

If you are invited to an interview, prepare thoroughly in advance. Research the company and have your CV ready. The purpose of the interview is to explore whether you are the right fit for the position. Be clear on how your skills can contribute, as well as your personal strengths and areas for development. Remember, the interview goes both ways—you need to be able to say yes to the company, just as they need to say yes to you. Ask questions about factors that matter to you in a workplace. For example, if a strong social environment is important, ask about the team culture. If professional development opportunities matter, inquire about those as well. This approach not only helps you gain more from the conversation but also shows that you are engaged and proactive.
